Five-term U.S. Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), once considered a “moderate” who worked hard to cross the aisle, has all but obliterated her reputation in the past few years. The Maine Republican has grown into a staunch right-wing lawmaker who voted with then-President Donald Trump 65 percent of the time – despite Trump losing* her state in 2016.
Collins recently came under fire for voting to confirm Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, Samuel Alito (who is the author of the leaked opinion overturning Roe v. Wade,) and Chief Justice John Roberts. Last week she was accused of feigning surprise that all Gorsuch and Kavanaugh will likely vote to remove, for the first time in the nation’s history, a constitutional right.
Now Collins is once again the target of criticism after she called the cops because someone sent her a message urging her to vote in favor of a bill to protect women’s rights to abortion, the Women’s Health Protection Act, by writing it in chalk on the sidewalk in front of her Bangor, Maine house.
“Susie, please, Mainers want WHPA —–> vote yes, clean up your mess,” a Bangor police dept. report says the message read, according to the Bangor Daily News.
“The message was not overtly threatening,” Bangor police said.
Amy Coney Barrett’s only qualification to be on the SCOTUS is being a religious lunatic who worked as a lawyer defending plaintiff Bush in Bush v. Gore, a court decision that broke the U.S. Constitution by putting the Supreme Court in a place it should never be: making political decisions that are exclusively the rights of voters and their elected representatives to decide. It was an outright attack on democracy and it undermined the legitimacy of U.S. federal elections forever which has been exploited to abuse federal power to undermine voting rights. The 2000 election should have been decided by the U.S. House of Representatives as prescribed in the U.S. Constitution for contested or tied presidential elections. This mechanism has been used several times in the history of the national government.
Or one could look closer to home, say….Colorado, which has lowered teen pregnancies and abortions drastically since adopting a policy of free contraception and sex education.
“The US Supreme Court’s legitimacy has been deeply pierced, and it may never recover its stature in the eyes of America.” Duh. At
this point, it would be better to do away with the damn thing. It has
no real, effective check and balance (unlike the other institutions of
government). The Rethugs and conservatives poison everything they touch. Alito
has explicitly laid the groundwork to go after conception, private
sexual activity between consenting adults, and same-sex marriage. “Activist judges,” anyone? Opus Dei, anyone? Separation of church and state, anyone? A disgraced court, and a disgraced institution. Of
course, irony being the greatest force in life, The Great Orange Idiot,
who is probably responsible for the greatest number of abortions in
history, appointed the judges who will carry this across the finish line
(despite those judges lying to Congress and individual Senators –
depending on your definition of lying).
Sorry, Sam. Too
late. Like it was already too late when you said all that. There is no taking
it back. I am done with you, and I hope that Hollywood is, too.
